Counseling

Relationships are complex and at times difficult. Sometimes other issues get in the way of our relationships going well. Here are some of the counseling options that Michael provides:

  • Couple Counseling

  • Family Counseling

  • Individual Adult Counseling

  • Counseling with teens and children

  • Play Therapy for Children

Collaborative, Integrative Approach

Michael's approach to counseling, above all else, is collaborative. Michael will listen carefully to you and will be interested in what it is that you'd like to accomplish. He will draw on his expertise and training to point out counseling and therapy options he believes would be the most effective route to your goals. You are always in the driver's seat and decide the course that counseling will take. Here are some of the counseling tools Michael often draws from:

  • Emotion-focused and Experiential approaches. Much like a picture is worth a thousand words, emotional experience can often create changes more quickly and that are longer lasting than just talking about a problem can.

  • Practical approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and visual approaches like Mind Mapping. Just speaking about a problem (the auditory mode), though somewhat effective, can limit the amount of information you can process. Incorporating visual representations of complex issues can help you to make multiple important connections much more quickly.

  • Mindfulness based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

  • Integrative approaches such as Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), and Schema Therapy.

  • Metaphorical and hypnosis informed approaches.

The approach to counseling chosen will be based on your preferences, the way you learn new skills and information best, and the depth at which you'd like to address the issues you're coming for assistance with. Please feel free to ask Michael questions about any of these approaches or how he approaches counseling and therapy.
